Liquid Air (2017)'30
Artistic Exposure: Philemon Mukarno’s Naked Truth in Venice
The Grand Canal shimmered during the 2017 Carnival. An audacious performance shocked the contemporary art world. It took place inside the magnificent Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi. Philemon Mukarno presented his intense new piece. The work was aptly titled “Liquid Air.” This was a central event of the LIQUID ROOMS exhibition. Furthermore, the show was part of Venice’s official festivities. Mukarno’s performance featured intentional public nudity. This act challenged tradition and societal decorum. Consequently, it sparked immediate, significant public discussion.
Nudity as the Ultimate Formlessness
The exhibition theme celebrated fluidity and motion. Its philosophy centered on the nature of being “Liquid.” This meant adopting no definite shape or boundary. The naked form perfectly embodies this concept. Public nudity strips away social expectation and armor. It leaves only the human core. Similarly, it mirrors the flow of air and water. Mukarno used his body as an empty vessel. It was ready to take on the shape of its surroundings. Thus, the deliberate exposure became essential. It showed humanity in its most universal state. Therefore, it connected deeply with the show’s title.
The Conflict of Luxury and Rarity
Palazzo Ca’ Zanardi provides a luxurious backdrop. Its ancient frescoes and stone floors are opulent. However, Mukarno introduced an element of raw rarity. The unadorned, naked body contrasted sharply with the palace. This dramatic conflict heightened the piece’s power. It pitted high culture against visceral reality. The exposed flesh was vulnerable against the cold stone. Consequently, the viewer felt a compelling sense of unease. This tension was the true engine of the performance. The historic setting amplified the modern artistic shock.
Transforming the Public Gaze
Public nudity in art forces viewer engagement. It instantly breaks down the fourth wall barrier. The audience is compelled to observe closely. Moreover, their own judgment becomes part of the art. Mukarno transformed the spectator’s gaze into participation. Looking at the naked body became an active choice. This level of exposure demands an ethical response. Furthermore, it invites pure, non-sexual interpretation. The performance was not just about the performer. It focused on the audience’s reaction and introspection. Subsequently, “Liquid Air” redefined viewing intimacy.
