EQUINOX

The September equinox is the one moment in the year when the sun crosses the celestial equator at a precise degree. Every point on Earth experiences equal duration of daylight and darkness — 12 hours of each, simultaneously, across all latitudes. It is an astronomical fact, indifferent to human presence, repeating every 365 days with mathematical precision.

Mukarno's performance treats this cosmic event as a bodily proposition.

He arrives at Stadhuisplein, Dordrecht, carrying white earth — kaolin clay — and water. In a corner of the square where two olive trees stand in square planters, he prepares. The clay is moistened until it reaches the consistency of slip. He then applies it to his naked body methodically: chest, arms, face, legs, feet. Nothing is rushed. He works in full public view. When the process is complete, his body is white and opaque — a standing figure covered in mineral earth. The living body has taken on the substance of ground.

From that corner, he begins to draw. Moving across the full width of Stadhuisplein, he presses white clay into the pavement, tracing a line from one edge of the square to the other. The line passes through the exact centre of the plaza. It corresponds to the angle of the sun at the meridian during the September equinox at this latitude and longitude — the precise solar path that divides the hemisphere at the moment of cosmic balance. A shadow cast without shadow. An astronomical measurement made legible in public space, at street level, with the body as instrument.

He draws the line alone. He does not speak. Passersby may stop or continue. The line is not explained.

When the line has crossed the entire square — from one lantern pole to the opposite — Mukarno returns to the place where he began. He stands there. The performance ends.

What remains is a white line across the square, and traces of clay where a naked body moved through a city on the day when night and day were equal. The equinox as an astronomical event lasts a single instant. The line stays until rain comes.
