Finding Spiritual Sanctuary in “Home”
Introduction
Philemon Mukarno, a performance artist, created “Home” during a workshop at Live Art Ireland. This residency took place at Milfort House, Ireland, curated by Deej Fabyc. The performance was part of the La Pocha Nostra & VestAndPage Alumni Summit in July 2024.
The Concept: Creating “Home”
“Home” is a performance where participants make their own sanctuary at Live Art Ireland. Mukarno chose a cottage as his home for prayer and meditation. He invites everyone to create their spiritual space, fostering personal growth and reflection.
Setting Up the Sanctuary
Participants begin by selecting a space that resonates with them. This space becomes their sanctuary. Mukarno’s choice of a cottage emphasizes simplicity and connection to nature. The act of setting up a personal sanctuary is the first step towards spiritual growth.
Engaging in Prayer and Meditation
Once the sanctuary is established, participants are encouraged to engage in prayer and meditation. These practices help connect with the divine and find inner peace. Mukarno’s performance focuses on these spiritual practices, creating a space for reflection and connection.
Inviting Spiritual Growth
Participants are invited to explore their spiritual paths within their sanctuaries. This includes practices such as journaling, yoga, and silent reflection. The aim is to foster a deeper understanding of oneself and one’s connection to the divine.
The Role of Community
Although each participant creates their own sanctuary, there is a strong sense of community. Participants are encouraged to share their experiences and support each other’s spiritual journeys. This collective experience enhances the sense of belonging and shared purpose.
Reflecting on the Experience
At the end of the performance, participants reflect on their experiences. They share insights gained and the impact of creating a personal sanctuary. Mukarno’s “Home” emphasizes the importance of finding a space for spiritual growth and the transformative power of community.
Conclusion
Philemon Mukarno’s “Home,” presented during his residency at Live Art Ireland, is a profound exploration of creating personal sanctuaries. The performance encourages participants to engage in prayer, meditation, and other spiritual practices. Mukarno’s work highlights the importance of finding a personal space for spiritual growth and the power of community support.
